How to Measure the Performance of your Business Online

By Tom Le Sueur

These days, it’s pretty easy to get hold of stats and graphs that can tell you a bit about how your business is performing online. But the real key to success lies in truly understanding how to transform your data into actions that align with your business objectives.

Unlocking your data can help you to create more of an impact and make better decisions based on the facts. With all the awesome digital tools now at our disposal, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be taking advantage of your data.

There are plenty of free tools out there that can get you started. Here are a few of our favourites!

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is the go-to tool for many businesses. This handy bit of web software can tell you a lot about how your website is performing. For example, you can see how people are reaching your site and interacting with each page. You can see who is visiting your site with the audience and geolocation metrics, which can tell you if you’re reaching the right people.  Comparing your visitor vs business conversion rate will also tell you whether your website is creating successful leads, or not.

MailChimp

MailChimp is an email marketing campaign service, and the free version has some nifty features! It gives you access to customisable templates, so you can throw together slick, branded email newsletters to send out to your contacts. However, it goes a step further by following-up your campaigns with reports on open rates, click-through, and subscriber rate. Analytics on what campaigns are your most (and least) successful can give you a better idea of what your audience likes and dislikes, so you know what to do next time.

BuzzSumo

BuzzSumo doesn’t analyse your business data. Instead, it lets you see data on the performance of top influencers’ content. This can be just as informative! The website lets you search keywords and topics to see the top performing content in terms of social media engagement and shares. Seeing how industry leaders are creating exceptional content using this tool can help to inspire some of your own.

Google Search Console

Search Console is another free tool that Google offer to help you monitor, maintain and troubleshoot your website’s presence in the search results. You don’t have to have a search console account to be able to show up in the search results, however it does help you understand and improve how google sees your site. The more you action on search console’s suggestions, the more likely you are to appear at the top of the search results for your keywords.

Search Console offers tools and reports for the following actions:

  • Confirm that Google can find and crawl your site.
  • Fix indexing problems and request re-indexing of new or updated content.
  • View Google Search traffic data for your site: how often your site appears in Google Search, which search queries show your site, how often searchers click through for those queries, and more.
  • Receive alerts when Google encounters indexing, spam, or other issues on your site.
  • Show you which sites link to your website.
  • Troubleshoot issues for AMP, mobile usability, and other Search features.

Specifically created to improve SEO, Ubersuggest is a free tool set up by marketing expert Neil Patel. It allows you to perform keyword research so that you can see the competition, cost per click and average monthly searches for any keyphrase. You will also be able to analyse the performance of your website as well as your competitor’s websites to help identify where you can improve and potentially outperform your competition. This tool is especially useful for identifying SEO errors and improvements to help you appear higher in the search rankings.
